I had the brilliant opportunity to see U2 this past weekend. Words can’t even begin to explain what an amazing show it was. But that isn’t what this post is about. Instead, it’s about something Bono said at least twice during that evening.
“America. What a great idea.”
Today it seems appropriate to chew on this for a bit. We live in arguably the greatest country on earth. We are a light of hope and an agent for freedom from tyranny and injustice. Yes, our history, like any history, is tainted by some very bad things (I.e. Slavery), but there has been so much good brought to the world through these United States of America.
But a powerful truth is that we are in danger of losing it and for that great idea becoming a part of history. We take our celebrated past and beautifully crafted constitution and laws for granted. And because of that neglect, the future might possibly change for the worst. I’m not trying to scare, I’m just making a layman’s observation of what is taking place in country. An Oregon town that wants to make the Pledge of Allegiance go away. A national debt that is out of control and a leadership (our president and congress) that is inept in dealing with it. A money, power, and fame driven culture that is more about “me” than what’s right. And an entitlement state that is dangerously beginning to look like Greece’s own ruined civilization.
But in the midst of it all, we are still a strong, wonderful nation full of proud people willing to make a difference. It’s hard to see how one person can make a difference…yet it only takes a spark to get a fire going. The place to start is to get educated. Listen and read in order to understand the facts. Use your intellect and values to filter these facts. And then share what you are learning with others. Educated people are free people.
America truly is a great idea.
